THE 24-HOUR PLAYWRITING COMPETITION

A programme of tWorks : WLAB

The 24-Hour Playwriting Competition organized by TheatreWorks from 24 April to 25 April 2004 at Angsana Resort and Spa Bintan achieved great success. Altogether, more than 70 participants took part in the competition that spanned over 24 hours.

While being inspired by stirring surroundings in Bintan, participants of the playwriting competition were supposed to create a dramatic play within a 24-hour timeframe. Love and Romance was the theme that the aspiring playwrights had to adhere to, in celebration of Romancing Singapore 2004. Besides following the pre-determined theme while writing the plays, participants had to incorporate five different stimuli in succession, given to them over a period of time.

For some of the playwrights, tension seemed to have disappeared from the competition as they went for a swim in the pool or a stroll by the beach. Some were even spotted doing a facial or going for a massage at the spa. The 24-hour stay at Angsana Resort and Spa Bintan suddenly seemed to have become an enjoyable holiday for them. However, quite a number of participants were still seen hard at work, trying every way to squeeze out all their brain juices in order to come up with the right plot and the right characters.

The competition is currently at its judging phase. Results of the winning plays are expected to be released in October 2004.

The 24-Hour Playwriting Competition is a programme under TheatreWorks’ Writers’ Lab which was started 13 years ago to identify Singapore’s budding playwrights and nurture those with the interest and potential to develop their writing skills.
