+ PERFORMING THE LOCAL IN SINGAPORE ARTS, 15 September 2013

TheatreWorks’ Managing Director and Director of Arts Network Asia, TAY Tong, is invited to speak at the upcoming arts forum, PERFORMING THE LOCAL IN SINGAPORE ARTS on the 15 September 2013. The forum, which consists of two sessions, involves 6 arts leaders in Singapore.

The arts in Singapore have changed substantially within the past two decades. Since the 1970s, when Singapore was recognised as a ‘cultural desert’, the arts industry in Singapore has managed to garner more state funding, developed better infrastructural arts centres, and nurtured more young people in the arts. Despite having a theatre and a museum ensconced in the heart of our latest ‘icon’, the Marina Bay Sands convention complex, we still hear arts practitioners and other participants asking, “Where are the arts going to now? There’s so much going on…” By the 1980s, the contemporary art forms in the visual arts and theatre became prominent and the questions regarding the role of arts and cultural identity seemed clearer. This forum will offer reflections of various arts practitioners and administrators on their artistic and leadership practices in relation to their understanding of the state of the arts today.

The arts forum is organised by the Literary and Cultural Studies Cluster, Nanyang Technological University.
